Chains are no longer used because truck tires are made to be conductive and will dissipate any charge. A grounded heat sink cannot develop a static charge. Here is a post on reddit which describes the boundary layer effects: https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/3hcd6s/how_does_a_constantlyrunning_fan_collect_dust/ This is an excellent description and one of the best that I have seen. The boundary layer can be very significant. It's why they add "dimples" to golf balls. -- Systemd: solving all the problems that you never knew you had.
