This was the key...

Seeing "GetPixels" at work got me trying again...

I now just load the original pic into (GraphicsMagick-powered)
TclMagick0.46 and use GetPixels for the rectangles I need to
examine...

and it became like *5 times faster* than my previous approach
with calling "convert" and parsing it's output. :-)
