I didn't bother to install it > on his new machine though. Depending on what type of phone, it can be simple to open the CameraRoll folder through a USB cable. In Android, you may have to explicitly authorize the use of USB for anything beyond charging. On iPhone, Windows can mount the entire iCloud Photos database as a folder in "This PC" (or "My Computer" or what they call it this year. On Linux, there is "icloudpd", a python program that can grab the last several hundred new photos from an iCloud account. I have used both.
