Your suggestion is best, which I tried on my Samsung for the OP.
Slide down from the top & it's a slider across the bottom of the screen.

I was gonna suggest a one-tap shortcut to the brightness settings
Samsung: Settings > Display > Brightness
But it's a private activity, not a public activity on my phone.
