After renewing online several times since 2006, I was forced to go in
last month and get a new "mugshot" for my drivers license.

I have an old birth certificate my late dad obtained for me back in
1973, it was so old that it was a "reverse negative" type document that
was used back in those days.

As long as I had to show up in person I thought I'd take it, and my
voter registration card, in to get a "REAL ID," although I wouldn't
have been heartbroken if they had refused to accept such an old birth
certificate.

To my surprise they accepted it without any problem, and my new license
with a REAL ID was mailed to me last week. Now, and after May 7, 2025,
I can board commercial aircraft flights within the U.S., access certain
federal buildings and enter nuclear facilities!

The drivers license testing station was just a few miles from me, there
wasn't even any waiting in line in my smaller city, so it really wasn't
a problem at all to get the new ID, although I'm sure it isn't that way
for everyone.

The worst thing about the whole experience for me was looking 18 years
older in the new pic, lol. We get new licenses in our state every 8
years so I don't know how I got by renewing online all this time
without having to get a new pic made. State bureaucracy SNAFU I guess.
