Joyce Malcolm is a historian well-beloved in gun rights circles whose

The discussion of 16th and 17th century attitudes is quite fascinating.
Why a militia and why was there horror of a standing army during
peacetime? That would be centuries of experience of standing armies in
Europe during peacetime whose main use was to oppress the people.

The militia was all able-bodied men from teenage boys to 60 year olds.
These were intended to be your friends and neighbors and hopefully
wouldn't be used to infringe upon liberty. Of course they were also
expected to be used to suppress slave rebellions...
