Ee-yup. Perl was my entry into Web programming. PHP also adopts the
loadable-module approach, and at one time there was even a mod_python
(might still exist).

But really, this approach doesn’t cope well with asynchronous programming
and WebSockets. In Python nowadays, I create a server running in its own
process using an ASGI-based framework, and put that behind the regular web
server using what they call a “reverse” proxy (really just a proxy on the
server side).
