Details about a new version of “The Office” were released this week.

This project is apparently not a spinoff or reboot, but is rather a show with
all new characters set in the same universe and shot in the same mockumentary
style as the original.

A logline for the new series says, “The documentary crew that immortalized
Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they
discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to
revive it with volunteer reporters.”

Per a report from Variety, the new comedy has been picked up by Peacock and
will begin production in July.

“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of ‘The Office’ aired
on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and
build new generations of fans on Peacock,” Lisa Katz, president of scripted
content for NBCU Entertainment, said.

“In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of
Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder
Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for
comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”

The American version of “The Office” was based on a British show of the same
name starring Ricky Gervais. It was set in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and
followed the staff at the Dunder-Mifflin paper company. The cast included
Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms, Mindy
Kaling, and B.J. Novak, and others.

The Emmy Award-winning show ran for 9 seasons beginning in 2005.

One of the most beloved aspects of the American version of “The Office” was
the irreverent humor, which one of the show’s stars said would never be
accepted in entertainment now.

Mindy Kaling acknowledged that the popular NBC comedy couldn’t exist in
today’s hyper-sensitive, politically correct culture and said she believed
most characters “would be canceled.”

“That show is so inappropriate now,” Kaling said during an interview with
“Good Morning America” in December 2022.

“The writers who I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how so
much of that show we probably couldn’t make now,” she added.

“Tastes have changed, and honestly what offends people has changed so much
now. I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular, because
people feel like there’s something kind of fearless about it or taboo.”
