No need to take my word for it. Bitsavers added issues of a magazine called “Mainframe” a few months back. I took the trouble to read the first one--it’s all about IBM, as though other “mainframe” machines didn’t exist. There’s a description of the background to CP/CMS (later VM/CMS) there.
