I would recommend the use of pullnews, which is more configurable and 
probably more used than nntpget:
   https://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/software/inn/docs/pullnews.html

Also, nntpget relies on the NEWNEWS command, which is not always enabled 
on upstream news servers.
