In the beginning I thought “Unix sockets”, which handle out-of-band data, 
but they don’t let you control the entire filesystem API. Though DAG 
connections (and other topologies) are certainly doable.

One current Linux mechanism that does give total API control, though, 
would be FUSE pluggable filesystems.
