Interesting (to me) that the UK's consumption has gone *down* about 20% over
the past 50 years. Note I'm talking about the UK - the figures from that link
suggest that consumption and (not surprisingly) generation have been going
down for quite a while. Meanwhile, China has trebled, and India has doubled,
in the past 20 years.

It's not just vehicles, though. Half of the UK's energy consumption is used
for heating, and most of that is gas. A lot of pressure (currently £7500 per
household) to move over to heat pumps. More pressure on the grid.

Anyway, my point is that something will have to replace the duty currently
collected on petrol once EVs take hold. And it seems likely that'll be owners
of electric vehicles.
