I would be uncomfortable using an ISP controlled router, allowing the 
ISP to control the firewall/gateway into my LAN.

FWIW, I use pfSense an open source router (FreeBSD based). It offers the 
features I need and performance for fast VPN tunnels. I wouldn't like to 
change, routing/firewall are both complicated/tricky and boring. It 
would be a pain to learn something different.

For WiFi, I use 4 cheap access points, with fast roaming. I think it 
good that this is decoupled from the router, less chance of security 
mistake. Also WiFi hardware has improved rapidly, whereas my router 
hardware is 10 years old and is still perfectly fine.
