By the historical definition afternoon is after midday all the way until
just before sunset, and then after sunset it's the proper evening.

5pm isn't evening when it's still bright all the way till 9pm and in
fact there's enough light to reed by until 1030pm.

So 9 hours and all day sticks.

Night is when there isn't enough light to read a book by and in the
summer that depending on the month lasts from about 1000pm to 12am till
0330 to 0400am when the sun starts to rise again, and that period is
called morning.

You probably don't understand the meaning of Day and are mixing it up
with Morning. Day can include morning, afternoon, evening, and even
night all at the same time or it can also mean when it's light, as
opposed to night being when it's dark, with morning, afternoon, and
evening all being counted together as day depending on how bright
evening is.
