Timeline wise, I believe Musk made his statement just after Trump got
hit.  Then he got cold feet when VP announced her intention for being
POTUS.

He's impulsive....I'm not aware of WSJ doing a retraction.

Note what he says below...."At no point did I say that I was
donating...for Trump."  I believe the money would have to go to a PAC,
not directly to/for Trump.  I think he evaded the reporter's question.
