Under Contacts there are some premade lists: All iCloud, Family, Friends,
My Coworkers, Neighbors. You can also create your own. 

Do you actually use different lists? I don’t really see much use to these
different lists because you can’t do any group actions with these lists. If
I created a group list of my motorcycle buddies, I can’t select them all
and send them a message. I still have to select each one individually to
create a group. And then if someone gets added or removed you have to
create a new group again. 

How do you use different Contacts lists?
