Probably. The vagaries of Usenet (and life!) would often confused Alex and
Chad.

These days, there’s some great action on Facebook where John and Chad
migrated to after tiring of the beatings they took on Usenet for more than
20 years. Chad now pretends that the man he repeatedly told us was “family”
and who had more virtue than any person he’d ever known, is suddenly
beneath him. He had no problem protecting and befriending the kiddy fiddler
when it suited him…
