Usenet got much more USE-able after Google got out of town. There's a 
lot less crap floating in the bowl these days, and I think there's a 
decent balance (or would be if someone would stop posting constant AI 
generated bullshirt).

The need for moderation was far greater once more people flooded the 
'net. Back in the early days it was just people saying what they wanted 
and indeed censorship online was frowned upon. Oh how times have changed.
