There's no general rule; Formal training assists and enriches some performers/songwriters while others get along well on extreme diligence and independent study alone. Once in a while there's even a 'natural', a.k.a., 'idiot savant' as an outlier. From musicians I've known, I'd say success correlates strongly to extreme diligence above all else. -- Andrew Muzi am@yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971
