He's mentioned having to deal with women pushing kids in strollers on his bike path, who (gasp!) try to say hello to him. It doesn't sound like "the hood." I'd bet that if he tried to ride my normal route into and back from the city center (using a motor to help climb out of the valley, of course) he'd be absolutely terrified.
