This was "way before the era of" cellphones or even 8-track tape

All-news radio

In 1960 KJBS radio in San Francisco, California, became KFAX and
changed formats from a blend of music, news, and sports to trial the
concept of a "newspaper of the air". The call letters reflected the
word facts. However, this experiment proved unsuccessful.
