I do remember people complaining about the UI though. Specifically I remember a thread here on Usenet where people were trying to figure out how to interact with a ladder. Personally I didn't have a problem with the graphics back then, though I did find the UI a bit clunky. It helped that I already knew the trick to using ladders.
