I've read that preferred sleep schedules are probably genetic. One anthropological article noted that in hunter gatherer villages, there is always at least one person awake. The article speculated that this was an adaptation for clan safety, so someone was always ready to raise the alarm if, say, a leopard wandered into camp. My (genetic?) "night owl" tendencies were reinforced by decades of teaching that often included evening courses. Winding down after teaching (and frequently, after bicycling home) took several hours. And I found I did my best grading of student work - especially their large projects - into the early morning hours. I concentrated much better. I still have to force myself to wind down, to stop use of the computer, the various musical instruments, the workshop or whatever, at 10 to 10:30 PM. Lights out never happens until well after midnight. BTW, regarding clan safety: I can proudly say our village hasn't had a single leopard attack since I moved here! -- - Frank Krygowski
