I'm counting the number of characters needed to express the function. Since one of BM's claims is that the C++ example was smaller than C. The difference between the two columns is whether indentation uses hard tabs or spaces. The C version is more deeply indentated so that makes a difference. (Also the width of the tabs, but everything was measured with tabs set to 4 characters.)
