Here’s another thing: the raw resolution of our retinas is on the order of 
gigapixels. But if you look at the bandwidth of the optic nerve, it’s 
nowhere near enough to transmit that amount of data a few dozen times a 
second.

So much of what you see (or what you think you see) is thrown away before 
it even gets to your brain.
