A message going through Apple's system has ten times the requirements of that same message going through just the carrier's services. For one, it requires an account on Apple's servers, which nobody on Android would need - and which is used by Apple to provide others with your data. Apple reports every year how many people they ratted out for example because of those additional overhead accounts above carrier services.
