I created a Java applet to construct and solve them around 25 years ago (about the same time as my "coin-moving" applet). The puzzles are like coin-moving puzzles, except square tiles are used (e.g., Scrabble tiles). Java applets no longer work in most browsers, but the instructions contain one example. The applet and instructions appear on my website at: file:///C:/Users/cginnow/Documents/Websites/Microprizes/public/tilemove.htm The goal of the tile-moving puzzles is to change one pattern into another by moving the square tiles around on a grid. When a tile is moved, at least two of its edges must touch the edges of other tiles. The example puzzle on my website is contained on a 4x4 grid and involves transforming the pattern: |X| | | | | |X|X| | | |X|X| | | | | |X| into: | | | |X| | |X|X| | | |X|X| | |X| | | | (The diagrams are best viewed using a fixed-width font) Solutions can be posted by giving the before and after coordinates (row, column) for each tile move. -- Carl G. -- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG antivirus software. www.avg.com
