In 1987 I went to China on a low-budget bicycle trip. The tour company provided us with Chinese bicycles with rod brakes. It was a good decision, because the last thing you wanted to do when riding in a mass of commuters was to slam on your brakes and cause a pile-up. You needed to just go with the flow and not make any sudden turns or stops. Since the rod brakes only slightly slowed the bicycle there were no rear-end collisions.
