Unfortunately my software was working on a digital oscilloscope whose underlying software did not know what to do with tabs, so all the on screen menus came out all over the place. I had to manually reinsert all the spaces in the display strings Because his theory that all spaces could be replaced with tabs, was not applicable to padded string literals inside the code itself -- Microsoft : the best reason to go to Linux that ever existed.
