When Sputnik 1  was launched on 4 October 1957, curricula changes were
forthcoming with funding for a science based education from elementary
level and upwards.  So, the federal dollars flowed, and those selling
"scientific" equipment to schools were singing "we're in the money" as
they jacked up the prices of beakers/etc.
