I learned after the crisis was over that SARS was very nearly an 
EXTREMELY serious situation, although I didn't fully realize it at the 
time. SARS came up in a discussion at my book club a year or two 
afterwards and two of the participants had in-depth knowledge. One was a 
fairly senior guy in the OPP and the other was a microbiologist at the 
local hospital and they both said it nearly turned into a much more 
serious outbreak than Covid given that SARS had a far higher mortality 
rate (and was more easily spread if I remember correctly). They were 
preparing for a major emergency and mass mortality....
