When using a > headset, I get the over-the-ear type with noise cancellation. It's just a podcast. Audio quality isn't a major concern. The concern is there are often long periods of isolated boredom when traveling on long trips where there are often benches or corners where you wait for some type of scheduled transportation to arrive but which you can't easily schedule because you have no control over arrivals/departures. During those long waiting periods you may or may not have access to USB power and you may or may not have access to the Internet so the question was asked without adding those two complexities into the problem set. Generally I download a few podcasts (just in case) and stream otherwise, but as I said, you can't be assured of an Internet connection at all times. Given those constraints, the question was only about the power delta between spitting out audio from the phone speaker versus via casting that audio to a separate bluetooth speaker (which is independently powered). With the equipment that I own, my hand-held bluetooth speaker is louder but it's a PITA to carry around and ensure that it's always charged up by USB. I had thought the phone's speaker would be MUCH MORE power hungry though, than casting the audio to the bluetooth speaker - but one respondent said it was NOT more efficient (while another said it was more efficient). So I'm still not sure.
