A guide will be your best bet, so much instant learning to be had with a 
pro.

There are going to be some public islands and beaches where a shore 
lunch is doable, no question.

we have a lot of small parks and picnic areas so a local will put you 
right. And frankly with as much public land as we have the right to walk 
and ramble is usually not a huge problem.
