The laugh is that, if it wasn’t for the EU, users of US-based social media 
companies would have no expectation of privacy at all. There is nothing in 
US law that prohibits companies collecting personal data and exploiting it 
for profit. It is only those EU-based regulations that put any kinds of 
brakes on such activity. And thanks to the way those companies operate, 
such brakes are effectively applied world-wide.
