While at special occasions, Hawaiians will dig a pit in the backyard, it's things like at a wedding party. I've seen it and helped. Our favirite bartender's daughter got married and asked us to come over to run the bar for her. We didn't see the digging or lowering of the pig but we saw it lifted out and got a taste of it. I've done plenty of other pit roasts. Mostly in TX.
