I just shared your post with my friend who spent most of his adult life 
in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). He has very similar views to both of 
us in terms of politics so I'm curious what he's going to say.

While I'm waiting on his response, I'll just make a few comments that 
I'm sure he won't disagree with. First, the CAF is bilingual. There are 
several English-speaking units and a few French-speaking ones. Even 
their business cards are bilingual. I don't very much about how it works 
beyond what I've said but I've never heard him say it was any kind of 
problem.

Second, I don't see us going to war with China, at least while Trudeau 
is in charge. In 2013, as the newly-elected leader of the Liberal Party, 
Trudeau was interviewed on TV and was asked what country he admires 
most. He said "China's basic dictatorship, because of its ability to 
turn on a dime." (That was the moment I knew I would NEVER vote for him 
or his party while he was in charge.) He's even allowed the Chinese 
military to have a training exercise on Canadian soil, although it was a 
VERY small one, less than 2 dozen Chinese soldiers. There's an ongoing 
scandal involving interference by foreign powers in our elections, most 
notably China, which may have accounted for who won a solid dozen seats 
in Parliament, mostly Liberals. Despite considerable public concern 
about this, Trudeau is still dragging out the inquiry. I'll be surprised 
if a final report is tabled in time for the next election. So, bottom 
line, the odds of us scrapping with China seem slim at best.

Third, marching is not fighting. If the CAF marching looks somewhat 
ragged - and I agree it does - we've got a fair bit of experience 
fighting and I understand we are held in pretty high regard by other 
armies. China, on the other hand, hasn't fought anyone since they tried 
to invade North Vietnam in 1979 and got their asses handed to them. The 
time before that was when they had a short war (or two) with India in 
the 60s.

in a lot less danger than generally thought.
