It means that some of the genes in dynoflagellates were designed so that they could produce mutlticellular animals, and function in those multicellular animals. The functional SOX gene existed before it was needed to evolve multicellular animals, and works just fine for doing what it does in dynoflagellates. Ron Okimoto
