Google severed their link to Usenet.

But that doesn't prevent people from using Gmail addresses on other news 
servers.

The amount of spam containing @gmail.com addresses has fallen through 
the floor.  Thankfully.

And with responsible admins like Retro Guy, when a bad actor does use a 
non-Google server, well they get evicted.  :-D
