The idea of having callable libraries with a fixed API, as opposed to spawning separate processes via command lines, sounded quite appealing, back in the 1980s, for these sorts of tasks. But in the real world, it turned out to be the inferior solution. Unix got it right. But then, Unix always had a better command-line interface than any DEC-original OS.
