Angel was a traditional spinoff, taking several long-established characters and moving them to the new show. A backdoor pilot introduces a character or two for one or two episodes and then the spinoff begins. My joke about Barney Miller didn't count as its pilot was on a summer show that was essentially an anthology of pilots. The answer is: Never ever.
