There's obviously semantics in play but I tend to agree that the best ever means something more than what you can technically take out of a term. So I'm happy to describe HL:2 as one of the best FPSes I've played (I still enjoy it to this date) but it doesn't make it onto my list of best ever PC games whereas HL:1 does. That not only redefined what I thought of as an FPS but also had a lasting impact on games that followed.
