As a kid, we were located between two large metropolitan areas (near a considerably smaller one). So, depending on how the antenna was oriented, you MIGHT pick up a fringe signal from one or the other -- in addition to the "local" broadcasts. Ditto with radio. Sometimes it was frustrating as you could *see* that they were airing something better than what was available, locally. But, unless the stars were aligned properly, you often couldn't watch (hear) it.
