I guess we can use this thread as a pretext to list favorite 
composers-conductors worth considering in both roles since Strauss 
(aural evidence matters, hence Mahler does not count regrettably). 
Stravinsky, Britten, Bernstein and Boulez, of course, but Maderna, 
Knussen and Ades come to mind as well. Not above bar for one reason or 
another Copland, Pfitzner, Hindemith, Salonen. Duke Ellington is hors 
concours.
