Chladni patterns. The salt settles into the vibrational nodes. That technique has been used extensively to study violin acoustics, and some maker use it to check their work in progress. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxUx9NC6ZJI At about 1:45 he shows his use of a reference to explain what patterns he's trying to achieve. The carving of the top and back is laborious, shaving the surface by hand so its constantly changing thicknesses generate the right modes of vibration in response to various frequencies. More of the process is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im8AhjMM1Cg with checking by Chladni patterns at about 13:00 or so. There's much more available on this if you look around YouTube and other sources. -- - Frank Krygowski
