Unknown about his state of mind, but not getting enough sleep can
affect thinking. Sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations, but YMMV
on what is experienced,

Years ago, I pushed the sleep deprivation "envelope," and when I
finally hit the sack, I went to bed for 24 hours, then another 12
hours after getting something to eat. It took me about a month to get
back to normal.
