I think AI is exactly like a lot of new technology:

First, it's always "10 years away".

Next, someone gets it working a little bit...

....and it gets hyped to the sky.

Then, people notice that it isn't working as well as they thought it 
would from the hype...

....and the slamming begins.

That's where we are right now with AI.
