Well as someone I knew who served in British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) 
once told me. When he asked his commanding officer what their role was, 
was told you've got two days before you're no longer a fighting force 
and after that the calvary will have hopefully arrived or more likely 
the nukes will have started flying.

Then again that was better than the Berlin Brigade that were described 
as a speed hump.
