The claim is that they have an ice core that may have some ice in it 
that is more than 1.2 million years old.

They are going to evaluate the ice for green house gases, chemicals and 
dust.  Around a million years ago the ice age cycles were becoming 
longer until we got to around 100,000 year intervals around half a 
million years ago.
