Yes, he certainly was a memorable individual. I'd not say that he 'chose' to go out early - he had health issues and we knew that he was quite sedentary. Each person who we know who was lucky enough to live long has beaten the average, which means that there was also someone who died below average, as illustrated by the other decedents on that list: age 90, 31, & 32. -hh
