And let's not pretend that what the colonists pulled off against England 
was very, very lucky, and very dependent on unique situations.

3000 miles of ocean, plagues of mosquitoes (seriously!) and lots of help 
from France were all necessary and very lucky for the Americans. If 
Ireland had tried the same thing - um, which they actually did - the 
outcome would have been far less successful.
